Standing and recitation are among the foundational pillars of salah. Qiyam means standing in prayer. In an obligatory prayer, standing is fard for a person who is genuinely able to stand. If a person is truly unable, prayer is performed according to ability. Voluntary prayer may be performed sitting even when standing is possible, although standing is more complete.
