The Hijrah was not a journey undertaken for wealth or sightseeing. After years of opposition and persecution in Makkah, Muslims were permitted to migrate to Madinah, where the community could worship and organise its affairs more securely. In the commonly used chronology the migration marks 622 CE and the beginning of the Hijri era. Do not confuse the later formal adoption of the Hijri calendar with the actual date of the event.
Learn the event as a clear story. Start with where and when it happened. Then ask what led to it, what the Prophet ﷺ and the people did, and what happened next. Put the main steps in time order. Some details are well supported by hadith, while others come from history books; do not give them all the same level of certainty. Avoid invented speeches or dramatic scenes. Finally, explain what the event teaches us about faith, fairness, leadership or care for others.
