Ikhlas means seeking Allah’s pleasure through lawful deeds rather than making other people’s approval our main purpose. Riya is showing off acts of worship to be admired. The distinction is about intention, and we should examine ourselves rather than confidently accusing friends of showing off. Public charitable work can be good when there is a sound reason to do it openly; publicity alone does not tell us everything about a person’s heart.
Imagine a school service project. We can share the practical announcement so volunteers know when to arrive, while protecting recipients’ privacy and avoiding embarrassing photographs. Before and after acting, ask: Would we still carry out this duty if nobody praised us? Sincerity also requires doing the work well, not merely saying we have a pure intention.
