Envy is resenting another person’s blessing and wishing that they lose it. This is different from being inspired to develop our own skill or making a fair request for an opportunity. Contentment (qana‘ah) means appreciating what Allah has provided while working lawfully for improvement. It is not an excuse to stop studying, neglect our health or ignore injustice.
If a classmate wins a prize, we can congratulate them and think constructively about our own learning goals. Comparing ourselves endlessly with polished social-media pictures can increase resentment. Practise listing three blessings we have, one improvement we can pursue and one way to celebrate someone else’s success without pretending that disappointment never occurs.
