In 5 AH, a large confederate force approached Madinah. The Muslims faced a serious threat and needed a defence suited to the city. After consultation, they dug a trench along exposed approaches to Madinah, a method unfamiliar to their opponents.
The work required cooperation, patience and endurance. The confederate army could not easily enter the city. After a difficult siege, the coalition eventually withdrew. The event became known as the Battle of the Trench, or al-Ahzab.
