The kalam argument from origination begins with the claim that the world is originated and therefore requires an originator. One classical line of reasoning considers the occurrence of changing states and whether an infinite regress of past occurrences is possible. Distinguish a potentially infinite mathematical series from a completed physical history: they are not identical concepts. A critic may deny that an infinite past is impossible; a defender must therefore justify the premise rather than merely repeat it. Modern cosmology can inform discussion of the observable universe but does not, by itself, settle every metaphysical question about temporal beginnings.
