01

Learn the main idea

Tanzih affirms that Allah does not resemble created bodies or depend on place, parts or instruments. We affirm divine perfection without imagining creaturely form.

02

A deeper explanation

Tanzih means affirming Allah's absolute transcendence over creaturely defects and limitations. The Qur'an declares that nothing is like Him. Bodies occupy locations, have dimensions and depend on parts; Sunni theologians reject describing Allah as a created body. Scriptural descriptions must be approached with both reverence for revelation and sound theological principles. Scholarly approaches to ambiguous expressions include consigning their ultimate reality to Allah and carefully governed interpretation. Neither approach permits imagining Allah as a human-shaped being.
