The Prophet ﷺ taught that actions are judged by intentions. Sincerity matters, but a good intention cannot transform an unlawful act into a lawful one.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that actions are judged by intentions. Sincerity matters, but a good intention cannot transform an unlawful act into a lawful one.
The hadith 'Actions are by intentions' establishes the importance of purpose in evaluating deeds. An outwardly identical act may be performed for sincere service or for public admiration. Yet good intention alone cannot legalise theft, lying or oppression. Islamic ethics therefore considers the intention, the act's legal character and the rights affected. Students should examine their motives without assuming they can read another person's heart.
