Zakat is an obligatory form of worship involving certain kinds of qualifying wealth. Rules such as ownership, nisab, the relevant period and asset category must be considered; it is not a compulsory fee on every child’s pocket money. Allah identifies categories of eligible recipients in the Qur’an. We also distinguish obligatory Zakat from voluntary sadaqah, which can be offered even in small amounts.
A classroom worksheet might show imaginary savings, debts and needs, but it cannot replace a real family’s careful Zakat calculation. We practise asking which assets are involved and whose needs are being considered. We must speak about recipients respectfully, protect their privacy and consult a knowledgeable adult before deciding whether a specific person is eligible.
