Ramadan fasting trains us in worship, patience and awareness of Allah. A fast includes a sincere intention and abstaining from food, drink and marital relations during its prescribed daytime, from true dawn until sunset. Suhur is the pre-dawn meal and iftar ends the day’s fast at sunset. Prayer, truthfulness and kindness should accompany this act of worship.
Some people have genuine legal concessions, including illness or travel, whose details depend on their circumstances and the taught fiqh. Children learn and practise gradually with parental guidance; fasting must not be imposed in ways that harm their health. We should not confuse accidentally forgetting that we are fasting with deliberately breaking the fast, and we seek a teacher’s help for special cases.
