New food and medical technologies require identifying the substance, its origin, processing and intended use. A ruling on an ingredient cannot be inferred from an unfamiliar scientific name alone. Examine whether transformation of a substance changes its legal character, whether a medicine contains prohibited ingredients and whether genuine necessity affects the judgement. Laboratory-grown foods, gene editing and novel additives raise different questions and should not be treated as one category. The juristic analysis depends on verified scientific facts and the relevant Hanafi principles.
