After Umar's fatal injury, a council of Companions consulted about succession, and Uthman رضي الله عنه became the third caliph.
After Umar رضي الله عنه was fatally wounded, he appointed a consultative group of leading Companions to consider succession. Historical reports describe consultation culminating in Uthman's selection as the third caliph. The process reflected its seventh-century political setting and should not be equated mechanically with modern electoral systems. Students should distinguish consultation, nomination and public allegiance and evaluate historical reports with source awareness.
