Riba is prohibited in the Qur'an. Jurists distinguish unlawful increases in debt obligations from particular unequal or delayed exchanges involving ribawi commodities. Hanafi law develops detailed rules based on the nature of the exchanged items and the transaction. Not every increase in a sale price is automatically identical to interest on a loan, and not every modern financial product can be classified from its marketing name alone. Students should learn the legal categories before applying them.
