01

Learn the main idea

A contingent thing can exist or not exist and needs an explanation. Allah is necessary and independent, unlike dependent creation.

02

A deeper explanation

A contingent being is one whose existence is not necessary in itself: it may exist or fail to exist. Its existence calls for an explanation beyond its own essence. Classical theological and philosophical arguments examine whether dependent beings can collectively explain themselves or whether an independent, necessary reality is required. In Sunni theology, Allah is not one contingent object among others; He is self-sufficient. The distinction concerns modes of existence, not merely which object is older or more powerful.
