02Primary Text
03Translation

As for Tasawwur, according to the theologians it is perception free of judgement. By judgement is meant relating one thing to another affirmatively or negatively; you may also describe it as affirmation and removal. Judgement may also be explained as the occurrence or non-occurrence of a relation. Thus, if you conceive Zayd by himself, or standing by itself, without affirming standing of Zayd or denying it of him, that is Tasawwur.

04Explanation

The commentary explains Tasawwur as the mental apprehension of a single meaning without being occupied with proving or denying something of it. Tasdeeq, by contrast, involves a relation between two meanings. It also notes that the word hukm is used in more than one closely related sense: for what is predicated, for the occurrence or non-occurrence of the relation, for the proposition containing that relation, and for assent to that relation.
