Zakat calculation requires identifying zakatable assets, applicable nisab, completion of a lunar year where required and eligible deductions under the adopted Hanafi method. The commonly used rate for qualifying monetary assets is 2.5%; recipients must meet legal conditions.
For qualifying money and trade assets, 2.5 percent is the familiar annual zakat rate once the relevant Hanafi conditions are fulfilled. But do not begin by multiplying every amount by 2.5 percent. First find out which wealth is zakatable, whether nisab and the relevant year rules are satisfied, and what deductions the adopted fiqh method allows. For a simple classroom exercise, suppose the teacher has already confirmed that a person's eligible net zakatable amount is ₹40,000 and that all conditions are met. One fortieth of ₹40,000 is ₹1,000. This is a learning example, not a ruling about a real family. After calculating, we still need to ask who may receive zakat. Qur'an 9:60 names categories of recipients. It is not enough to give money to any organisation without checking whether zakat will reach an eligible recipient in an acceptable way. Record the calculation steps and show how you checked both the amount and the recipient.
