Umar was fatally attacked in 23 AH. Before his death he designated a consultation group to choose the next caliph; Uthman was subsequently selected. Study the sequence and the reported procedure while distinguishing early reports from later political interpretations.
Umar رضي الله عنه was attacked and died in 23 AH (644 CE). The community then faced the difficult task of choosing another leader. Historical reports describe how he appointed a small consultation group to consider succession. The group discussed the matter, and Uthman ibn Affan رضي الله عنه was eventually selected as the next caliph. This episode illustrates both the sadness caused by the death of a leader and the practical need to keep public affairs working. A timeline helps: the attack, Umar's final instructions, consultation and the selection that followed. But a historian must not fill every gap with invented conversations. The Qur'an praises consultation in 42:38; this is a general principle rather than the minutes of those meetings. When reading later accounts, ask who reported the event and which details are well supported. The aim is to learn about responsible change of leadership without turning disagreements about historical details into insults against any companion.
