What Is Backbiting?

The Prophet ﷺ explained backbiting as mentioning about another person something they would dislike. If the negative statement is true, it can still be backbiting; if it is false, it becomes an even more serious false accusation. Not every necessary report is backbiting. If someone is being harmed, we may need to tell a parent, teacher or responsible person in order to seek help. The purpose is protection and correction, not entertainment or humiliation.
