Justice, Equality and Fairness

Justice requires fair standards and attention to relevant differences. Equal treatment does not always mean identical treatment in every circumstance.

By the end of this chapter, explain the central terms of Justice, Equality and Fairness; distinguish the main claim from its supporting evidence; apply the concept to a relevant case; and identify an important limitation or misconception.

Ethical reasoning: identify the intention, chosen action, relevant rights, foreseeable effects and available alternatives. A good purpose cannot excuse injustice, and respecting people does not require accepting every argument as true.

Look at a real situation involving other people. Who has a right, what facts have been checked, and which options could cause harm? A good intention does not make a harmful act right. Give two choices, explain their consequences, then defend a fair decision. In situations involving abuse or danger, seek help from a trusted adult.
