Under Uthman, official copies of the Qur'an were prepared to reduce disputes over recitation and writing. This followed the earlier collection under Abu Bakr.
The Qur'an was memorised and written during the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime, and a collected written manuscript was prepared under Abu Bakr. During Uthman's caliphate, differences among communities over recitation and written forms prompted an organised effort to produce and distribute standard copies. Reports identify Zayd ibn Thabit and other Companions in this work. The initiative sought communal consistency; it did not mean that Uthman composed a new revelation.
